How to install mac os-x high sierra on a macbook pro from 2008-2011

12/31/2017

As you may or may not know, and you probably know if you have a MacBook pro from 2008-2011, it is not possible to install the latest and greatest version of mac os-x on your precious MacBook pro. Apple has done this officially because it claims the hardware on these older computers is not compatible with the new OS but this does not seem to be true. How do we know? simple really, we found a way to install high-sierra on older MacBook pro's (A1278 variants from 2008-2011) and we could see clearly that the OS runs very nicely on the computers. It's true that the performance is clearly slower than a brand new MacBook pro but we still think that paired with a good SSD your old laptop can be used for many more years with the latest OS version released by Apple.
So without any more chatter, here is how you can have it done:
What you will need:
  1. A working MacBook
  2. A brand new SSD such as this one
  3. A working internet connection (to download the OS)
  4. A sata to USB cable such as this one

Once you got all the tools the process is very straightforward. You will simply need to do the following
  1. Connect the new SSD using the sata to usb cable to the MacBook
  2. Make sure the disk is initialized and visible. If you do not know how to do this simply follow one of these guilds Yosemite and earlier or El-Capitan and later
  3. run the installation file on the mac
  4. Tell the mac to install on the external disk
  5. Once the installation reached the part at which it asked you to choose a language, replace the old hard drive with your new one and complete the installation
  6. Using migration assistant transfer all your old setting, files and folders
  7. That’s it, you got MacOS High-sierra running on your beloved MacBook pro

We highly recommend this upgrade path even if your mechanical hard-drive still works. A new SSD will make your MacBook pro A1278 feel modern again and will assure it will work for many years to come.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions of if you feel unsure that you can do this on your own and would like us to perform the upgrade for you
Happy 2018 everyone
