“Tightrope” off Janelle’s upcoming album The ArchAndroid is inspired James Brown music, legwork and all, but I must say it’s pretty much dope (period).
Like I said, I like this track. In fact, I kind of love it (like you can see, I'm still giving it five stars). It's fun and fresh and exciting; I just wish that it felt like a Janelle Monae song and not an Outkast song featuring Janelle Monae. She is a talented singer and she apparently has her own distinct vision. “I’m an alien from outer space” declares Janelle Monáe on the first song of her debut album, Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition). The often compared to Andre 3000 female R&B singer was discovered (ironically) by Big Boi at a local music event. It wasn’t long before Puffy fell in love with her first single “Violet Stars Happy Hunting” streaming online and decided to contact her via her MySpace. Ms. Monáe initially thought it was a prank until Big Boi confirmed it wasn’t. That exchange led to her current deal with Bad Boy allowing her full creative control. The sophomore album The ArchAndroid releases May 18th 2010
She detailedly explains the song’s concept:
‘Tightrope’ deals with balance. Early on in my career, and even now, it’s a daily struggle to stay balanced and not get too high or too low. It was something that I hadn’t really heard in a song. If I was telling somebody how to make it through life, I would definitely tell them that balance is important. You can’t get too high on praises and you can’t get too low on any one situation. I wanted that song to be an empowerment song. I wanted people to find their inner confidence and to feel more self-empowered in understanding that they have to stay more balanced in life. That was my goal. James Brown influenced it, of course. I wanted it to be that 2010 beyond anthem—that classic song that you can go to in any moment when you feel like things are out of control in life. That’ll be your little medicine.
